This chapter is a part of the 2017/2018 KSP with Iran, and has been conducted under the title of “Enhancing Competitiveness of Iran's Pharmaceutical and Medical Equipment Industries”. The main purpose of this study is to provide the Iranian government with creative recommendations, to find cooperative development opportunities, and to help the Iranian industries transit to more competitive and be equipped with stronger innovation capacity.
The Pharmaceutical and Medical Equipment sector in Iran is an established market with substantial growth potential expected for the future. Rising demand owing to a sizable population growth rate of 1.3%, along with growing medical manufacturing industries originating from historical backgrounds of science and technology, the opportunity for business in this sector is well understood for both domestic and foreign countries. International players have an established presence in Iran’s pharmaceutical value chain, however, participation in the medical services industry is an emerging trend yet with high propensity.
The Korean pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries are growing rapidly and presents excellent opportunities in the area of development and distribution of products and services. Korean pharmaceutical companies have occupied 0.2~0.3 percent of the global export market since 2000. There are huge potential of technology and trade cooperation in pharmaceutical and medical equipment for Korea and Iran
In this report, we capture a general picture of pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries in Iran and Korea. We also describe current market situation, production, and structure of companies in the industries for both countries. We also present key governmental and non-governmental stakeholders’ structure with the relevant ministries since the industries are heavily related to regulations. In trade, we discuss export and import, FDI, and global position of the industries. Research and development strategies and current technological capabilities are discussed. Also, some leading companies in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and medical equipment industries are presented. In sections 4 and 5, we review and provide general policy suggestions and instrumental approaches for enhancing the Iranian pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries.
